At the Hard Rock Stadium in Washington on Tuesday, July 1, one of the most iconic and anticipated Round of 16 clashes in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will take place: Real Madrid vs Juventus. Two of the most successful clubs in Spanish and Italian football history, Los Blancos and the Bianconeri arrive at this tournament following relatively disappointing domestic seasons and are both eager to make a deep run. Following the end of their league campaign, Real Madrid appointed Xabi Alonso to inject new energy after Carlo Ancelotti's long and successful tenure. The former Bayer Leverkusen coach began his Group H campaign with a 1-1 draw against Al Hilal but successfully turned things around with wins over Pachuca and Red Bull Salzburg to top the group. One of the most remarkable aspects of their journey is that it was achieved without Kylian Mbappé, last season's top scorer in La Liga, who has been sidelined due to health issues. Juventus, who finished fourth in Serie A, got off to a strong start with convincing wins over Al Ain and Wydad. However, they suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat to Manchester City in their final group game, which saw them finish second in Group G. While coach Igor Tudor rotated heavily for that match, it doesn’t fully excuse such a poor performance. Given the rich history between these two clubs, fans and neutrals alike can expect a thrilling, hard-fought match.
The painful 11 May loss to Barcelona — which sealed La Liga for the Blaugrana — is now behind them. Since then, Real Madrid have gone on a six-match unbeaten run, recording five wins and one draw. Their most recent victory came on Thursday, June 26: a dominant 3-0 win over Red Bull Salzburg, with goals from Vinicius Junior, Valverde, and Gonzalo Garcia.
Xabi Alonso's men finished top of Group H with seven points (7 goals scored, 2 conceded). Even without Mbappé, the attacking department has performed well, averaging 2.2 goals per game across their last five fixtures. Defensively, despite several injuries, they've been solid, conceding just twice in their last five matches.
Juventus came into the Manchester City match on a seven-game unbeaten streak (five wins, two draws) but were soundly beaten 5-2 in their third group game. Goals from Koopmeiners and Vlahovic weren’t enough to mask a poor defensive display, with Guardiola’s side creating even more chances that could’ve worsened the scoreline.
Under Igor Tudor, Juventus finished second in Group G with six points, scoring 11 goals and conceding 5. Their attack has been productive — 3.2 goals per game over the last five matches — but their defense continues to be inconsistent, having kept just two clean sheets in their last seven outings across all competitions.
Despite both clubs enduring underwhelming domestic seasons, they've shown flashes of their quality in this Club World Cup.
Real Madrid are still adapting to Xabi Alonso’s tactical system, especially defensively. The good news is the return of Antonio Rudiger, whose experience will be crucial alongside young defender Huijsen — a former Juventus player. In attack, there’s a possibility Mbappé could make his return from the bench, though Valverde and Gonzalo Garcia have already stepped up with two goals each in the competition.
Juventus, on the other hand, have shown defensive vulnerabilities against top-tier opposition, as seen in the loss to Manchester City. However, their offensive output remains promising. With Kolo Muani, Chico Conceicao, and Yildiz all rested in the last match, they’re expected to bring fresh energy and could cause problems for Courtois.
According to BetMines' algorithm, Real Madrid are strong favorites with a 50% chance of winning compared to Juventus’ 25%. There’s also a high probability that both teams will score at least one goal (52% vs 48%).
REAL MADRID (4-1-2-3): Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Rudiger, Huijsen, Fran Garcia; Tchouameni; Bellingham, Valverde; Arda Guler, Gonzalo Garcia, Vinicius. Coach: Xabi Alonso.
JUVENTUS (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Gatti, Kelly; Alberto Costa, Thuram, McKennie, Cambiaso; Conceicao, Yildiz; Kolo Muani. Coach: Tudor.
