At the Municipal Stadium of Aneota in San Sebastián, matchday 29 of La Liga sees two teams facing off who, at first glance, appear to have little left to fight for this season: Real Sociedad and Real Valladolid. The 2024/25 La Liga season will not be remembered as a remarkable one for Real Sociedad, who, after finishing sixth last season, have been stuck in mid-table for weeks, with five teams separating them both from a European spot and the relegation zone. This standing is undoubtedly disappointing for a team that had aimed, at the very least, to secure a place in the next Conference League, a competition from which they were eliminated in the playoffs by Manchester United in mid-March. The only lifeline for Imanol Alguacil's side is reaching the Copa del Rey final, but that depends on overturning the 1-0 first-leg deficit suffered against Real Madrid in the semifinals. If Real Sociedad's season has been underwhelming, things are even worse for Real Valladolid, who are on the verge of relegation to Segunda División. Rubio’s team has not won in La Liga since January 11, sitting 11 points behind the team in 17th place, making their return to the second tier almost inevitable after just one season.
It has been a tough period for Real Sociedad, whose last victory came on February 23, when they defeated Leganés 3-0. In their last five matches across all competitions, the Basque side has recorded three draws and two losses, averaging just 0.8 goals scored while conceding 2.4 per game.
Their disappointing league position is also due to their poor home record, where they have suffered six defeats in 14 home matches, alongside six wins and two draws. At the Municipal Stadium of Aneota, Alguacil’s squad has scored 15 goals and conceded 14 so far this season.
Real Valladolid is experiencing a truly disastrous campaign, having lost eight of their last nine league matches. Their most recent defeat came before the international break when they fell 1-0 at home to Celta Vigo. In their last five matches, the Castilian side has recorded four losses and one draw, scoring three goals while conceding 15 (an average of three per game)—far too many to keep any hope of avoiding relegation alive.
Rubio’s side boasts the worst attack and worst defense in La Liga, with just 18 goals scored and 63 conceded after 28 games. Additionally, their away form has been catastrophic, earning just three points from a single win (no draws and 13 defeats), with an average of three goals conceded per away match.
At this stage of the season, motivation often plays a bigger role than the actual quality of the teams, and in this case, Real Sociedad—who also benefit from playing in front of their home crowd—may still have something to fight for.
Although they are nine points off sixth place, with 10 games still to play, Real Sociedad could still attempt to climb the standings, starting with three crucial points against a Valladolid side that looks like they are simply waiting for the season to end.
Additionally, the Basque side boasts key players, including Takefusa Kubo, who will be full of confidence after helping Japan qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
For these reasons, the BetMines algorithm predicts a clear victory for the home team.
