After experiencing two completely opposite seasons, Real Valladolid and Ceuta face off in one of the two opening fixtures of the LaLiga 2 2025/26 season. At the José Zorrilla Stadium, the home side are looking for redemption after last year’s painful relegation, finishing bottom of LaLiga with just 16 points from 38 games. It was a disastrous campaign that led to the appointment of Uruguayan coach Guillermo Almada, fresh from several successful seasons in Mexico with Pachuca, including participation in the last FIFA Club World Cup. There have also been changes at the ownership level. After numerous protests from fans, former Brazilian star Ronaldo decided to sell the club last May. Following the €11 million sale of promising left winger Raul Moro to Ajax, the new management focused on bringing in experienced players, mainly from the free agent market, in an effort to bounce straight back to the top flight. Ceuta, a city located in Morocco but officially Spanish, come into this match after a historic promotion to the second tier. After winning Group 2 of the Primera Federación, Juan Romero’s men sealed their place in LaLiga 2 by winning the two-legged final against Cultural Leonesa. Riding the wave of excitement from their achievement just a few months ago, Ceuta will be aiming to leave the José Zorrilla with a positive result and, perhaps, lay the foundations for another successful campaign.
With the aim of building match fitness and learning the new coach’s tactics, Real Valladolid played several preseason friendlies between July and August. “Pucela” recorded back-to-back wins against Chilean side Colo Colo (2-0 and 1-0), suffered a heavy defeat to Bristol City (4-0), and drew their final warm-up against Burgos FC (2-2). These results suggest a team still searching for its identity.
Coach Guillermo Almada has plenty of work to do. Valladolid had both the worst attack and worst defense in LaLiga 2024/25, averaging just 0.7 goals scored and 2.4 goals conceded per game. At the José Zorrilla, they have not won since January 11 (1-0 vs Real Betis), a run that includes eight losses and one draw. To mount a promotion push, they must urgently start picking up points at home again.
The newly promoted Ceuta also played their traditional preseason friendlies, starting the new campaign with survival as their primary objective. After losing their first two matches against Lieria and Torremolinos (4-1 and 2-0), they bounced back with three consecutive wins against Al-Wakrah, Cádiz, and Sevilla B — the last two without conceding a goal. This is a team in form and ready for their LaLiga 2 debut.
In the Primera Federación 2024/25, Ceuta showed strong defensive organisation, conceding exactly one goal per game and keeping 15 clean sheets in 38 league matches. Offensively, they scored 52 goals in total (including the playoff tie against Cultural Leonesa), averaging 1.3 per match. Away from home, they lost only three times all season, winning five and drawing eleven.
The first matchdays of a new season often produce surprises, especially when teams from different divisions the previous year go head-to-head. If we looked only at the squads on paper, there would be little doubt about the outcome — but this could be a potential upset.
The hosts are coming off a disastrous season, and two months of preparation may not have been enough to fix all their attacking and defensive problems. For this reason, Almada is expected to field a compact 4-4-2, giving more cover to the backline and hoping that the partnership up front, combined with the wing play of new signing Biuk and youngster Chuki, will produce at least one goal.
The visitors, on the other hand, are riding high after a dream season and can use the momentum from their promotion to start the new campaign with a positive result. Juan Romero is expected to stick with his traditional 4-2-3-1, with Anuar (facing his former club), Zalazar, and Vallejo supporting lone striker Ortuño. This setup allows them to break forward with both technical skill and speed after winning possession.
Based on all this, the Real Valladolid vs Ceuta prediction from BetMines expects an away win or draw (Double Chance X2) and a match where both teams find the net.
