Prediction published on Aug 4, 2025 4:50 PM by Dario in Europe - Champions League | Modified on Aug 4, 2025 7:22 PM
Both teams made headlines in different ways during last season’s UEFA Champions League, but only one between Red Bull Salzburg and Club Brugge will keep the dream alive of reaching the next edition of Europe's top club competition. On Wednesday, August 6, the Austrians will host the Belgians at the Red Bull Arena for the first leg of one of the most anticipated ties of the UCL third qualifying round. The hosts had a disappointing run last season, finishing second in the Austrian Bundesliga behind Sturm Graz. Their European campaign was even more frustrating: eliminated in the Champions League group stage, collecting just three points from eight matches. Still, Red Bull Salzburg has been a regular in the UCL in recent years, participating in the last six editions and even reaching the Round of 16 in 2021/22. Club Brugge, on the other hand, was one of last year’s biggest surprises in the competition. They reached the Round of 16, where they faced Aston Villa, after eliminating Atalanta in the playoff round. Coach Nicky Hayen's side impressed with their fast-paced, attacking football, drawing attention to several key players. De Cuyper and Talbi have since moved to the Premier League, while Jashari has been heavily linked with a transfer to AC Milan for weeks. However, the Champions League campaign came at a cost: they unexpectedly finished second in the Belgian Pro League behind Royale Union SG. With both clubs having major ambitions—and with the winner set to face either Rangers or Viktoria Plzen (arguably favorable opponents)—we can expect 180 minutes (or more) of intense, open football.
After being knocked out of the FIFA Club World Cup group stage on June 27, Red Bull Salzburg officially began the 2025/26 season on July 23 with a clash against Brann in the second qualifying round of the Champions League. Since then, the Austrians have played four official matches, recording 2 wins and 2 draws, including a 2-2 league opener against Ried.
In these early fixtures, Thomas Letsch's men have shown their usual offensive strength, scoring an average of 2.75 goals per game, but some defensive frailties have also emerged. They've managed to keep just one clean sheet—against low-tier Dietach in the Austrian Cup first round. Still unbeaten this season, Salzburg has lost only once in their last nine matches—against Real Madrid in the Club World Cup.
Club Brugge kicked off their season on July 20 by defeating Royale Union SG 2-1 in the Belgian Super Cup. In their two league games so far, Hayen's team beat Genk 2-1 before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Mechelen. A mixed start, marked by defensive inconsistency.
The Blauw-Zwart share a similar record to their Austrian counterparts: just one loss in their last nine matches across all competitions. In 2025, they've been strong on the road, losing just four of their last sixteen away games. That includes tough UCL venues like Manchester City and Aston Villa, making their away form all the more impressive.
Two clubs with clear intentions to reach the Champions League group stage face off at the Red Bull Arena, making this a high-stakes encounter. It’s expected to be a closely contested match. Salzburg will rely on home advantage, but Club Brugge showed last season they can win away, even as underdogs.
According to the BetMines prediction, goals seem likely. Both teams play attacking football, favoring possession-based build-ups and looking to create danger through their wingers. However, this style exposes their backlines to constant pressure, making clean sheets rare for either side.
Given the attacking profiles of both squads, BetMines tips this as a game where both teams will score, and with Over 2.5 total goals—meaning three or more goals are expected.
