On Tuesday, June 17, at Lumen Field in Seattle, River Plate kicks off its journey in the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup, which now features 32 teams from all around the globe. In their opening match, the Argentine giants will face Japan’s Urawa Reds, who, along with Inter Milan and Monterrey, make up Group E. The Millonarios come into this tournament after a bittersweet month of May: while they managed to top their group and qualify for the Copa Libertadores Round of 16, they were eliminated in the Apertura Tournament playoffs by Platense. This Club World Cup could not have come at a better time—it offers a chance for redemption and an opportunity to reaffirm their continental form. River Plate, who lifted the Intercontinental Cup (an early version of the Club World Cup) back in 1986, will be looking to start strong with a win that would bring them one step closer to the knockout stage. As for the Japanese side, three-time AFC Champions League winners Urawa Reds do not appear to pose an insurmountable challenge for River Plate. The only realistic goal for Maciej Skorza’s men seems to be avoiding last place in the group, with their best chance to collect points likely coming in the final group match against Mexican side Monterrey.
On May 28, River Plate secured their place in the Copa Libertadores Round of 16 with a 1-1 draw against Peruvian side Universitario. With that result, they topped Group B with 12 points from six matches. Just a week earlier, on May 21, the Millonarios were knocked out of the Apertura Tournament playoffs, losing to Platense on penalties.
Despite an up-and-down season so far, River Plate—one of the most iconic South American clubs—remains a tough opponent. They are currently on a 17-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. However, much of their success has come at home, in the legendary Bombonera stadium, where they've lost just once in their last 21 matches.
Urawa Reds come into this match off a 2-1 win over Yokohama, led by a brace from Swedish midfielder Gustafson. The victory moved them into fourth place in the J1 League standings, seven points behind leaders Kashima. Over their last five matches, Urawa have recorded two wins, two draws, and one loss, with an average of 1.6 goals scored and 1.4 conceded per game.
After 21 rounds of J1 League play, Skorza’s side has collected 34 points, scoring 26 goals and conceding 20. These numbers suggest a balanced and well-organized team with a solid defense, though not particularly prolific in attack. Their top scorer in the league is Watanabe, with six goals.
River Plate, one of the most decorated clubs in South American football, may not be enjoying one of their strongest seasons, but they remain heavy favorites against Urawa Reds.
Coach Marcelo Gallardo can rely on a high-caliber squad featuring several 2022 World Cup winners, such as goalkeeper Franco Armani, Gonzalo Montiel, and Marcos Acuña. In addition, the squad boasts players with European experience, including center-backs Germán Pezzella and Lucas Martínez Quarta (both former Fiorentina players), and former West Ham midfielder Manuel Lanzini.
Also in the spotlight is 2007-born prodigy Franco Mastantuono, who is reportedly on his way to Xabi Alonso’s new-look Real Madrid. The technical gap between these two teams, combined with River Plate’s greater experience in international fixtures, suggests the Argentinians should win comfortably, taking a significant step toward the Round of 16.
Given the struggles Urawa Reds are facing even in their domestic league, it’s hard to imagine them securing even a draw in this encounter.
The River Plate vs Urawa Reds prediction for this Group E match in the FIFA Club World Cup strongly favors the Argentinians to win (1), in a match where the Japanese side may not even get on the scoresheet.
RIVER PLATE (4-3-3): Armani; Montiel, Martinez, Diaz, Acuna; Castano, Perez, Meza; Mastantuono, Driussi, Colidio. Coach: Marcelo Gallardo.
URAWA REDS (4-2-3-1): Nishikawa; Ishihara, Ogiwara, Gustafson, Boza; Holbraten, Kaneko; Yasui, Matsuo, Savio; Watanabe. Coach: Maciej Skorza.
