At the Caykur Didi Stadium on Monday, September 15, Rizespor and Genclerbirlig face off in one of the potentially most intense and hard-fought matches of Super Lig Matchday 5. Both teams are currently at the bottom of the table: the home side has collected just one point from the first four rounds, while the visitors are still at zero. In the previous round, before the international break, Rizespor lost 3-1 away to league leaders Galatasaray, overwhelmed by goals from Sanchez, Osimhen, and Icardi. İlhan Palut’s team now has a single objective: beat newly promoted Genclerbirlig to start climbing the standings. Coming off four consecutive defeats, the visitors arrive in Rize aware of the huge challenge ahead but motivated to at least secure a draw. Another loss would seriously complicate Genclerbirlig’s plans to stay in the top division after four seasons in the second tier.
Rizespor need to change pace after a decidedly difficult start to the season. In the first three matchdays, they have collected just one point, from a goalless draw at Alanyaspor, while two defeats against Galatasaray (3-1) and Goztepe (0-3) have highlighted multiple issues.
The most concerning statistic is their home fragility: in the only home match of the season, the heavy defeat to Goztepe already raised the first warning signs. This contrasts sharply with the end of last Super Lig season, when Rizespor achieved four wins and a draw in their last five home games.
A nightmare start for newly promoted Genclerbirlig: four losses in four games and bottom of the table with zero points. The area suffering the most from the step up is the defense, conceding an average of two goals per game. The attack has done its part so far, scoring three times, including once in the last 3-1 loss to Fenerbahce.
The first two away games this season ended in two 2-1 defeats against Samsunspor and Gaziantep. This is a reversal from last season, when Genclerbirlig, finishing with promotion, lost only five away matches, winning and drawing seven.
Rizespor, with only one point from the first three rounds, have a golden opportunity to unlock their first win of the season. The home clash against the last-placed team is a must-win for İlhan Palut’s side, who need to react quickly to escape the relegation zone and restore confidence among fans.
Recent head-to-head results favor the home team: at the Caykur Didi Stadium, Rizespor has won three of the last four official matches against Genclerbirlig. This adds to the difficulties the visitors have shown away from Ankara, where they are still adjusting to the top flight.
For these reasons, BetMines’ prediction leans toward Rizespor, clearly favored to secure three points. At the same time, there is a good chance the match will be entertaining: the last four encounters between these two teams have all seen goals from both sides and at least three goals overall.
