At the National Arena in Bucharest on Friday, March 21, Romania hosts Bosnia-Herzegovina in the opening match of Group H in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Alongside these two teams, the group also includes Austria, Cyprus, and San Marino. Romania, led by Mircea Lucescu, is on an upward trajectory, having dominated their Nations League group and securing promotion to League B. After an impressive Round of 16 appearance at Euro 2024, Romania won all six of their Nations League matches (one by default against Kosovo), largely thanks to Razvan Marin, who scored six goals. Now, the only goal is to secure three points against Bosnia-Herzegovina and outperform Austria, the slight favorites to win Group H. A completely different mood surrounds Bosnia-Herzegovina, which hasn't won an official match since October 13, 2023 (a 2-0 victory over Liechtenstein). Sergej Barbarez's squad, after being relegated to Nations League League B, will try to limit the damage in this away game, but given Romania's form, even a draw seems unlikely.
Romania is in outstanding form, winning all their Nations League group matches, including a 3-0 default victory against Kosovo, after Kosovo abandoned the game due to political tensions.
Lucescu's team scored 15 goals in five matches, conceding only three. Overall, Romania has lost just two of their last 10 matches, both against Netherlands and Belgium at Euro 2024.
Bosnia-Herzegovina endured a disastrous Nations League campaign, finishing bottom of Group 3 with just two points. However, they faced tough opponents like Germany, Netherlands, and Hungary.
The only bright spot for Barbarez was a 1-1 home draw against the Netherlands, with Stuttgart striker Ermedin Demirovic scoring the equalizer. In their last five matches, Bosnia-Herzegovina has conceded an average of 2.4 goals per game, scoring only 0.4 per match.
Veteran coach Mircea Lucescu aims to start strong and challenge Austria for the top spot in Group H. Romania dreams of returning to the FIFA World Cup, a competition they haven’t qualified for since 1998.
Despite missing key players like Dragusin (defense) and Mihaila (attack), Romania has what it takes to defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina, whose World Cup qualification hopes still rely on Edin Dzeko, who just turned 39.
Considering the last three head-to-head matches in Romania, all of which were won by the home team, the BetMines algorithm prediction for Romania vs Bosnia-Herzegovina strongly favors a home victory.
