On Tuesday, June 10th, at the National Arena in Bucharest, Romania hosts Cyprus in a crucial clash to keep their 2026 World Cup qualification hopes alive. Mircea Lucescu’s side needs nothing less than a win after a lackluster start to their group campaign: just one victory in the first three games, which came against bottom side San Marino, still on zero points. A result that was widely expected, as all teams in the group — Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Cyprus — are tipped to take maximum points against the minnows. Back-to-back defeats against Austria and Bosnia have left Romania six points behind group leaders Bosnia (who have a perfect record) and level with Austria, who have played one game fewer. This fixture against Cyprus could be a turning point for the hosts: a win is essential if they are to stay in the race for their first World Cup appearance since France '98. They already defeated Cyprus last November in the UEFA Nations League. Cyprus, on the other hand, arrives in Bucharest with the same number of points as Romania, but one game less played. Their results so far mirror Romania's: a win against San Marino and a loss to Bosnia. Vangelis Mantzios’ men dream of a historic first-ever qualification to a major international tournament, but their chances of getting a result here seem slim. Their away form has been poor, and past encounters haven’t gone their way. In terms of international experience, Cyprus also appears to be a step behind the Romanians.
It’s a tricky period for Romania, who are struggling to find consistency in these World Cup Qualifiers. After three games, they’ve recorded one win and two losses, with 6 goals scored and 4 conceded. In their last match on January 7, they lost 2-1 to Austria, only managing to pull one back in stoppage time thanks to Florin Tănase.
Looking at their last five overall matches, Lucescu's team has secured three wins and two defeats, with an average of 2.4 goals scored and 1.2 conceded per game. At home, before their narrow 0-1 loss to Bosnia, they had racked up three straight wins in the Nations League, including a dominant 4-1 victory over Cyprus on November 18, where they scored at least three goals in each match.
Having been inactive during Matchday 2 of the World Cup Qualifiers, Cyprus arranged a friendly against Bulgaria, which ended in a 2-2 draw with goals from Koutsakos and Laifis. In their previous five competitive games, Mantzios’ side recorded two wins and three losses, averaging 1.2 goals scored and 2 conceded per match. The numbers reflect a side that’s vulnerable at the back but maintains a decent attacking output.
Away from home, results have been particularly poor: Cyprus have lost their last three road matches — against Kosovo, Romania, and Bosnia — conceding a total of nine goals and scoring just two, for a grim average of 3 goals conceded per game. Their last away win came back in September: a 1-0 success over Lithuania in the Nations League.
Romania has a flawless home record against Cyprus, winning all seven of their previous meetings on home soil. Most recently, they triumphed 4-1 in the Nations League clash last November.
Following their recent loss to Austria, the hosts are under pressure to win — not only to stay in contention for first place but also to fend off Austria, who will likely beat San Marino in their next match. With Bosnia on a rest day, this is a prime opportunity for Romania to make up ground.
Lucescu is expected to rely on the home advantage and the superior quality of players like Dennis Man and Razvan Marin, both of whom have impressed in Serie A with Parma and Cagliari, respectively. Cyprus, with their poor away form and limited squad depth, seems unlikely to pose a significant threat.
Given the importance of this match, the quality gap, and the result from last November, the prediction for Romania vs Cyprus leans heavily toward a comfortable home win.
