One of the most anticipated fixtures of Round 12 in the Brasileirão Betano sees São Paulo host Vasco da Gama at the historic Estádio do MorumBIS in São Paulo. Despite both clubs’ prestige and rich history in Brazilian football, they currently sit in the lower half of the table — São Paulo in 13th and Vasco in 15th — separated by just two points. A win for Vasco would see them leapfrog their rivals and edge closer to the spots that grant at least a Copa Sudamericana qualification. However, the season is still in its early stages, and it's hard to believe that these two giants will remain in the bottom half for long. Both sides have mitigating circumstances: São Paulo has been heavily affected by injuries, especially in attack, and has had to juggle a packed schedule. The club is set to compete in the Copa Libertadores playoffs in August and the Copa Betano round of 16 between July and August. With continental competitions temporarily on hold, São Paulo can now focus on the league and aim to bounce back from two straight defeats. Vasco da Gama is in a similar situation, also coming off two consecutive league losses. However, they recently advanced to the Copa Sudamericana playoffs and the Copa Betano last 16. A glaring issue for Vasco this season has been their away form, having lost all five of their league games on the road so far. Avoiding defeat in São Paulo would be a significant step toward climbing out of the relegation zone and aiming for continental qualification.
São Paulo comes into this round following two straight Brasileirão Betano losses: a 0-2 defeat to Mirassol and a 2-1 loss to Bahia. Over their last five matches in all competitions, the Tricolor Paulista has recorded 3 wins and 2 defeats, with an average of 1.4 goals scored and conceded per match. They've failed to keep a clean sheet in their last seven games and have seen both teams score in five of the last six.
After 11 league matches, São Paulo sits 13th with 12 points from 2 wins, 6 draws, and 3 losses. Offensively, they have struggled — just 9 goals scored (0.82 per game), one of the lowest tallies in the league.
Home form has been their strong point: 2 wins, 3 draws, and just 1 loss at the Morumbi. Overall, São Paulo has lost just one of their last 11 home games in all competitions, winning 5 and drawing 5.
Vasco da Gama also enters the match off two consecutive league defeats — 2-1 in the Fluminense derby, followed by a 0-2 loss away to Bragantino. However, they did manage a convincing 3-0 win over Melgar in the Copa Sudamericana in between. Their last five matches across all competitions have resulted in 2 wins, 2 losses, and a draw, averaging 1.6 goals scored and 1 conceded per match.
In the Brasileirão Betano standings, Vasco is currently 15th with 10 points (3 wins, 1 draw, 7 losses). They average 1 goal scored and 1.36 goals conceded per game. Their away record is alarming: 5 losses in 5 away league games, with just 3 goals scored and 10 conceded.
Vasco has not won on the road in their last 10 away matches (8 losses, 2 draws). Their last win outside Rio dates back to March 6, when they beat Nova Iguaçu 0-3 in the Copa Betano.
Given their poor league starts, both teams will be highly motivated to pick up points and escape the bottom of the table.
São Paulo will lean on their strong home record, having lost just once at the Morumbi since March. Still, their recent tendency to concede at home raises concerns, and they’ll need to balance aggression with defensive solidity. Head coach Luis Zubeldia is dealing with multiple absences, including key players Ruan Tressoldi, Jonathan Calleri, Lucas Moura, Marcos Antonio, and Oscar.
Vasco da Gama will likely adopt a cautious and calculated approach, aiming for their first away point in the league and to avoid a fifth straight away loss in all competitions. They are also without long-term absentees David, Guilherme Estrella, and Dimitri Payet.
Given that both teams have suffered two consecutive league defeats and can't afford more missteps, we can expect a tight and physical game with few goals. São Paulo has a solid home presence but one of the league’s weakest attacks. Vasco has failed to score more than once in each of their last eight away games.
Prediction: Under 2.5 total goals seems to be the most reasonable outcome for this Brasileirão Betano Round 12 clash.
