On Tuesday, September 16, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will host the clash between Tottenham and Villarreal, valid for the opening round of the single-league stage of the UEFA Champions League 2025/26. The Spurs return to Europe’s top competition after a two-year absence, thanks to their triumph in the 2024/25 Europa League which granted them direct qualification. On the London bench sits Thomas Frank, who replaced Postecoglou in July and is tasked with relaunching a team that finished a disappointing 17th in the Premier League but was significantly strengthened by an ambitious summer transfer window. The English side already had an international taste this season, playing the UEFA Super Cup final in August against Paris Saint-Germain and only losing on penalties. Villarreal, on the other hand, return to the Champions League after three years thanks to finishing fifth in last season’s La Liga. The Yellow Submarine, coached by Marcelino, aim to relive magical nights like those of the 2021/22 season when they reached the semifinals before being eliminated by Liverpool. Both teams target qualification for the knockout stage by finishing inside the top 26 in the single-league format. Securing points from the very first match is crucial before tougher fixtures arrive. We can therefore expect an intense and hard-fought game, with the home side still considered favorites.
Tottenham started the season positively, winning three of their first four Premier League matches and losing just once, scoring a total of 8 goals (an average of 2 per game) while conceding only one. This highlights the rediscovered defensive solidity of the Spurs, who even kept a clean sheet against top-level opponents like Manchester City.
In their last league outing, Thomas Frank’s men comfortably won 3-0 away at West Ham, thanks to goals from Sarr, Bergvall, and Van de Ven. After three rounds, Spurs sit third in the table, three points behind Liverpool. Compared to last season’s finish just above the relegation zone, this represents a significant turnaround.
At their home ground, Spurs have so far recorded a win against Burnley and a loss against Bournemouth, showing they are not entirely flawless at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
After winning their first two La Liga games, Villarreal slowed down, drawing 1-1 with Celta Vigo and losing 2-0 away at Atletico Madrid. The Spanish side currently sit fifth in the standings with 7 points, behind Barcelona, Getafe, Athletic Bilbao, and Real Madrid, boasting one of the league’s best attacks with 8 goals scored in 4 matches.
While Villarreal’s defense kept clean sheets in their opening two matches against Real Oviedo and Girona, the last two games exposed some weaknesses, conceding three goals in total. In attack, the standout performer has been Canadian forward Tajon Buchanan, already netting 3 goals this season.
The Yellow Submarine have struggled in their first two away fixtures, with a draw and a loss. However, in the latter part of last season, they collected six wins from their last eight away matches, proving they can be dangerous on the road and should not be underestimated when playing away from the Estadio de la Cerámica.
This is an unprecedented competitive meeting between Tottenham Hotspur and Villarreal: the two sides have only faced each other once in a friendly back in 2010, with the Spaniards winning 4-1.
For this UEFA Champions League 2025/26 Matchday 1 clash, the home side start as slight favorites. The main reasons are twofold: the home advantage and the superior current form of Thomas Frank’s team.
In addition, it must be noted that Spurs boast a much deeper and more competitive squad compared to Villarreal. The club strengthened Frank’s options by signing experienced international players such as Palhinha, Xavi Simons, and Kolo Muani, from Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and Paris Saint-Germain respectively.
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (4-3-3): Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Sarr, Bentancur, Bergvall; Kudus, Richarlison, Simons. Coach: Thomas Frank
VILLARREAL (4-4-2): Junior; Mourino, Foyth, Veiga, Cardona; Pepe, Gueye, Parejo, Moleiro; Perez, Mikautadze. Coach: Marcelino Garcia Toral
