Matchday 3 of LaLiga kicks off on Friday, August 29, with the evening clash between Valencia and Getafe, two teams that started the season in completely opposite ways. The hosts are still chasing their first win of the season, having collected one draw and one defeat in their opening two games. On the last matchday, Corberan’s men fell 1-0 away to Osasuna, playing with ten men for more than seventy minutes. Even though the season is still in its early stages, that loss raised some concerns, especially if they fail to secure three points even against Getafe. Gone are the days when Valencia was consistently fighting at the top of the table and competing in European cups. This season, the goal is to improve on last year’s 12th place, maybe pushing into the left-hand side of the table. However, given the financial problems that hit the club in early 2025 and the limited transfer activity, this looks more like a transitional season. Corberan will need to get the best out of the squad at his disposal. On the other side, Getafe comes in full of confidence, sitting on maximum points after the first two games. Bordalas’ men are chasing a third straight win, aiming to collect valuable points early on before performances naturally dip as other teams find their rhythm. Building an early cushion is key to avoid another difficult season like the last one, where they finished 13th with just a two-point margin above the relegation zone. Despite their financial struggles, the Azulones are showing pride and determination and will try everything to extend their winning streak against a Valencia side still stuck in the mud.
After drawing at home in the season opener against Real Sociedad, Valencia lost 1-0 away to Osasuna last weekend, conceding just nine minutes in to Ante Budimir. Carlos Corberan’s men played almost the entire game with ten men after Gaya was sent off with a straight red card in the 22nd minute, managing just one shot on target.
After two rounds, the Bats sit in 14th place with just one point, having scored only once (Diego Lopez) and conceded two goals. Valencia can take some comfort from playing at home: in their last seven matches at the Mestalla Stadium, they recorded four wins, two draws, and just one loss.
Getafe is without a doubt one of the early surprises of this LaLiga season, winning both of their opening matches. Last weekend, José Bordalas’ men defeated Sevilla 1-2 away, while on Matchday 1 they also won 0-2 away against Celta Vigo. New signing Adrian Liso has been the standout player, scoring three of the team’s four goals so far.
Thanks to these two victories, Getafe sits at the top of the table alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Athletic Bilbao. What’s more impressive is that both wins came away from home, something that bodes well ahead of their trip to Valencia. Including the last match of the 2024/25 season in Mallorca, they have now won three straight away games in LaLiga.
Recent meetings between Valencia and Getafe have not exactly been thrillers, often producing few goals and little entertainment. Excluding the 3-0 win for the Bats on May 10, 2025, the previous four head-to-heads all finished with two goals or fewer.
Valencia has shown attacking struggles in the first two matchdays, largely due to the poor form of Hugo Duro, who scored 11 goals last season but is still goalless this year. Not surprisingly, each of Valencia’s last five competitive games has ended with under 3 total goals.
Getafe arrives full of confidence but will face a team that usually performs better at home. The visitors could find it difficult to score, especially if Valencia manages to keep Adrián Liso quiet, currently the most dangerous weapon for the Azulones.
