Mission impossible for Viktoria Plzen, who on Tuesday, August 12 at the Mesta Plzne Stadium will need to overturn a three-goal deficit against Rangers in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. A week earlier in Glasgow, Russell Martin’s side virtually secured progression to the next round, defeating the Czechs thanks to a brace from new signing Gassama and a coolly converted penalty by former Cremonese striker Dessers. Viktoria Plzen must now overcome a monumental challenge, needing at least a four-goal victory to reach the playoff round against the winner of Salzburg vs Club Brugge. In the first leg, Miroslav Koubek’s men displayed glaring attacking weaknesses, failing to threaten Butland’s goal, while also showing defensive fragility. They were repeatedly exposed on the flanks by Gassama, scorer of two goals, and by Antman, who earned the penalty later converted by Dessers. Based on what we saw at Ibrox Stadium, Plzen will need a dramatic shift in performance just to trouble a Rangers side in great form. The Scottish side, with a three-goal cushion, can afford to control the tempo of the match and preserve energy ahead of their August 16 home fixture in the Scottish League Cup against Alloa. Given their recent European experience and a squad that is superior both technically and in depth, it seems highly unlikely that the Gers will return to Glasgow without qualification secured.
In their last league match, Viktoria Plzen were held to a 1-1 draw by Slovacko, conceding the equaliser in stoppage time after taking the lead in the 23rd minute through Prince Adu’s first goal of the season. Their record over the last five matches is far from positive: two defeats, two draws, and just one win, with an average of 1 goal scored and 1.4 conceded per game.
In UEFA Champions League qualifiers so far, the Viktorka have played three matches, earning one win and two losses, scoring 3 goals and conceding 5. Defensive stability is the main concern, as Koubek’s side have conceded in each of their last eight matches, including pre-season friendlies. At home this season, they are yet to win, with two draws and one defeat.
Following their big win against Plzen, Rangers showed some fatigue in the league, managing only a 1-1 draw with Dundee FC. Russell Martin’s men, however, showed great character: despite being a goal down and reduced to ten men, they equalised in the 92nd minute via a Tavernier penalty.
Despite this minor setback, the Gers are enjoying a strong start to the season. In their first five competitive matches, they have recorded two wins and three draws, averaging 1.6 goals scored and 0.6 conceded per match. More broadly, they are unbeaten in 12 consecutive games. Away from home this season, they have secured two draws, against Panathinaikos and Motherwell.
The first leg between Viktoria Plzen and Rangers highlighted the clear superiority of the Scottish side, who are more motivated than ever to secure Champions League qualification. The three-goal advantage represents a strong foundation for progression and will inevitably influence the tactical approach of both teams.
Viktoria Plzen will need to adopt an aggressive, proactive approach from the very first whistle, aiming to score early and reopen the tie. Expect them to focus play down the wings, with their wing-backs tasked with supplying the strike duo of Vydra and Durosinmi.
Rangers, by contrast, have no need to force the game and will likely allow their opponents more possession, looking to hit on the counter through the pace and skill of their front three: Gassama, Dessers, and Antman. With a three-goal advantage, Russell Martin’s men might allow a lapse in concentration, potentially conceding at least once.
That said, Rangers remain favourites to secure either a win or a draw, given their technical superiority and overall better form. Furthermore, the BetMines algorithm predicts an entertaining game with both teams scoring at least once – a scenario that has occurred frequently in recent matches involving both Viktoria Plzen and Rangers.
