On Monday, August 4, Fabio Carille’s Vitoria hosts Abel Ferreira’s Palmeiras at the Estádio Manoel Barradas in one of the most anticipated clashes of Round 18 in the Brasileirão Betano. The home side is looking to extend their unbeaten streak to five matches since July 17, a run that has lifted them out of the relegation zone—thanks also to the inactivity of their direct rivals. Vitoria currently sits 15th with 17 points, just two ahead of Santos, who would be relegated to the second division if the league ended today. However, Carille’s men can’t afford to relax, as the teams behind them still have one or two games in hand. Securing even a single point against Palmeiras could be vital for boosting morale and possibly targeting a spot in the Copa Sudamericana zone, just three points away. Palmeiras, meanwhile, comes into this match on the back of one of their first real disappointments of the season: a bitter defeat in the first leg of the Copa Betano round of 16 derby against Corinthians. It’s no coincidence that one of the few slip-ups for the Verdão came in a cup match—Palmeiras are still in the race for the Copa Libertadores—but they’ve looked nearly flawless in the league. Abel Ferreira’s team has won three straight Brasileirão Betano games and currently sits third with 32 points, just four behind leaders Flamengo, who have played one more match. Thanks to a rock-solid defense and a clinical (if not explosive) attack, the São Paulo-based club is showing all the qualities of a potential Brazilian champion, two years after their last league title.
After back-to-back defeats at the beginning of July to Confianca (Copa do Nordeste) and Internacional (Brasileirão Betano), Vitoria bounced back with one win and three draws in their next four matches. In their most recent league fixture, they drew 1-1 away at Mirassol, with Baralhas equalizing after Edson Carioca’s opener for the hosts.
Overall, the trend is positive for Fabio Carille’s side: in their last five games in all competitions, they’ve recorded one win, three draws, and one loss, averaging 0.8 goals scored and 0.8 goals conceded per game, while keeping two clean sheets.
Vitoria’s home form has been inconsistent this season. Across all competitions, they have won just two of their last nine matches at home (with three draws and four defeats). They are, however, unbeaten in their last two games at the Estádio Manoel Barradas: a 1-0 win over Red Bull Bragantino and a 2-2 draw with Sport Recife.
On July 31, Palmeiras saw their three-game winning streak (all in the league) come to an end with a 1-0 loss to Corinthians in the first leg of the Copa Betano round of 16, courtesy of a goal from Depay in the 78th minute. It marked their first defeat since their Club World Cup exit, where they lost 2-1 to Chelsea in the quarterfinals.
Despite this setback, Palmeiras’ recent form remains strong. Across their last five matches in all competitions, they’ve registered three wins, one draw, and one loss, with an average of 1.4 goals scored and 1 conceded per game.
Palmeiras have also built an impressive away record, losing just two of their last 19 away games across all competitions. In league play alone, they’ve won six of their last seven away matches—each by a one-goal margin (0-1 or 1-2).
Following their Copa Betano defeat, Palmeiras will aim for a fourth straight league victory to maintain their title push. According to the BetMines algorithm, the Verdão have a solid 46% chance of winning, and here’s why.
Firstly, Palmeiras has dominated the head-to-head history, winning eight of their last ten encounters against Vitoria, including four of the last five at the Estádio Manoel Barradas. Secondly, the form comparison is clear: Palmeiras have won three of their last four matches, while Vitoria have only one win in their last eleven.
Both teams have struggled in front of goal this season, with Vitoria averaging 0.82 goals per game and Palmeiras 1.26 in the league. The hosts have failed to score in three of their last five home matches, and nine of their last ten games have featured under three total goals.
Given that Palmeiras have also consistently won away matches by narrow margins, the Vitoria vs Palmeiras prediction from BetMines leans towards an Under 2.5 goals outcome.
