Winterthur, by winning at home against Sion in the last round of the Swiss Super League Relegation Group, would secure their place in the top division for the next season as well. If the league ended today, Uli Forte’s men would be safe, occupying the third-last position with a one-point advantage over the last two spots, currently held by Yverdon and Grasshoppers. The objective against Sion is therefore victory, since even a draw might not be enough to avoid direct relegation or, at best, the relegation playoff reserved for the second-last team against the runner-up of the Challenge League. To beat Sion, now without any ranking ambitions, Winterthur must change their course, considering they haven’t won in the last two matches, collecting only one point against the bottom-placed Yverdon. Tholot’s team arrives at the Tourbillon Stadium with an eight-point lead over the penultimate place, already certain to maintain their category next season. Sion, who boast two league titles in their history, have had a disappointing away performance this season—one of the main reasons for their overall below-expectations results. Despite coming off a run of four consecutive positive results, this away weakness could prove decisive in the 38th and final round match of the Swiss Super League Relegation Group.
Winterthur has slowed down in the last two matches, losing 4-1 to Zurich and drawing 2-2 last weekend against Yverdon. Before these two setbacks, they had a streak of four consecutive wins, including a notable 4-1 away victory against St. Gallen on May 10. In the last three games, Uli Forte’s team has always scored and conceded at least one goal.
The white and reds currently occupy the third-last spot in the Relegation Group with 37 points, achieved through 10 wins, 7 draws, and 20 losses. Defense has been the weak point all season: Winterthur has the worst defensive record in the Super League, having conceded 68 goals (an average of 1.84 goals per game). At home, they remain unbeaten in four matches, with two wins and two draws.
Sion is unbeaten in four matches, with two draws and two wins, the latest a 2-1 victory last Saturday against Grasshoppers, thanks to a brace from Kosovo midfielder Benjamin Kololli. In the last nine games (3 wins, 3 draws, 3 losses), they have always conceded at least one goal, showing defensive frailty.
Tholot’s men occupy fourth-last place with 44 points, from 11 wins, 11 draws, and 15 losses, already certain of survival. In 37 matches, Sion has scored 47 goals and conceded 55, averaging 1.27 goals scored and 1.48 conceded per game. Their away form has been the Achilles heel of the season: only 3 wins and 3 draws in 18 matches, with their last away win dating back to December (0-1 against Yverdon).
Winterthur won 2-1 in their last encounter against Sion in April, overturning the initial lead signed by Chouaref in the first half with goals from Buess and Gomis. However, historical head-to-head records favor Sion, although, once again, motivation could outweigh the performances shown so far this season.
The home side absolutely need to win to guarantee survival, holding just one point advantage over the last two positions of the Relegation Group. To succeed, they will rely on the goals of Matteo Di Giusto, who has scored 9 goals this season, and Nishan Burkart, currently with 4.
The visitors, now without ranking objectives, will still try to finish their season strongly, although away from home they have never looked capable of consistently competing. Watch out for Benjamin Kololli and Ylyas Chouaref, with 8 and 6 goals respectively.
Precisely because of the stronger motivation, the Winterthur vs Sion prediction, valid for the 38th round of the Super League, developed by the BetMines algorithm, leans towards a home win.
