Spain’s road to the 2026 World Cup begins in Bulgaria, after winning both Euro 2024 and the 2023 UEFA Nations League. Given their recent track record and the competition in Group E (Bulgaria, Turkey, and Georgia), La Roja are clear favorites to finish top of the group without major issues. The first step is a convincing win at the Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia, securing three points and bouncing back from their painful Nations League final defeat on penalties against Portugal last June. Coach Luis de la Fuente can rely on a very young squad, yet one that has already collected trophies both with Spain and at club level. The two main threats, decisive in Euro 2024, are Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, lethal both in one-on-one situations and in front of goal. Being ranked 2nd in the FIFA World Ranking, Spain’s trip to Bulgaria is unlikely to hide many dangers: a comfortable win for the Iberians seems the most logical outcome. As for Bulgaria, their chances of fighting for second place look slim. The only way Ilian Iliev’s men could dream of an upset is by limiting the damage in their double clash with Spain, and then trying to collect as many points as possible against Georgia and Turkey. A scenario that, unfortunately for Bulgaria, is easier to imagine than to achieve.
Bulgaria are going through a tough spell, with three defeats and two draws in their last five matches (including June’s friendlies against Cyprus and Greece). Their most recent test against Greece ended in a clear 4-0 loss, exposing defensive weaknesses.
On the brighter side, their last UEFA Nations League campaign was more positive: second place in Group 3 of League C with 9 points, just two behind leaders Northern Ireland. However, promotion hopes ended in the playoffs against Ireland, who won both legs 2-1.
Home form has been far from encouraging: including the 2-2 draw with Cyprus, Bulgaria haven’t won at home in four games (three draws, one loss). Their last home victory was on 8 September 2024, a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland thanks to a decisive goal from Despodov.
Spain are unbeaten in 25 official games but arrive at this Group E opener hungry for redemption. Last June, Luis de la Fuente’s men lost the UEFA Nations League final against Portugal on penalties, failing to repeat their 2023 triumph in the same competition.
In recent matches, La Roja have shown their usual attacking power, averaging 2.8 goals in their last five games. However, they’ve also conceded 2.4 on average, a sign that defensive focus has sometimes slipped. Spain look built to win by simply scoring more than their opponents.
Away from home, their Nations League campaign was solid: two wins (in Denmark and Switzerland) and three draws (against Serbia, Netherlands, and Portugal). Except for the surprising 0-0 in Serbia, every match featured at least three goals.
After lifting the 2023 Nations League and Euro 2024, Spain begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign as strong favorites not just to beat Bulgaria, but to comfortably top Group E.
The away win (2) seems almost certain, but the more interesting betting market is “at least one team does not score”. Spain have all the tools to keep a clean sheet against a side with limited attacking options. Bulgaria’s forward line offers few guarantees: Martin Minchev, their likely reference point, scored just one goal last season.
Tactically, the game should follow a predictable script: Spain dominating possession, Bulgaria sitting deep and hoping to counterattack. Still, it’s hard to imagine a midfield of Pedri, Zubimendi, and Fabián Ruiz losing the ball often enough to be punished.
BULGARIA (4-2-3-1): Dyulgerov; N. Minkov, H. Petrov, Nedyalkov, Nurnberger; L. Petkov, Gruev; Despodov, Milanov, M. Petkov; Minchev. Coach: Ilian Iliev
SPAIN (4-3-3): Simon; Carvajal, Cubarsi, Huijsen, Porro; Pedri, Zubimendi, Ruiz; Yamal, Oyarzabal, N. Williams. Coach: Luis de la Fuente
