On Thursday, August 7th, at the Apostolos Nikolaïdīs Stadium in Athens, one of the most intriguing clashes of the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League third qualifying round will take place. Facing off are two clubs with a rich European pedigree: on one side, Panathinaikos, determined to bounce back after their Champions League exit; on the other, Shakhtar Donetsk, who have impressively navigated their first two rounds. The home side, runners-up in last season’s Super League Greece, earned a place in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, but their dream was short-lived. The Rangers advanced with a 3-1 aggregate win. Thanks to UEFA regulations, however, Panathinaikos were handed a second chance by dropping into the Europa League qualifiers. A competition they know well—having featured in the group stage in 2023/24—although last season they were knocked out in the Round of 16 of the Europa Conference League by Fiorentina. Shakhtar Donetsk, meanwhile, arrive with strong momentum. After thrashing Finnish side Ilves 6-0 on aggregate in the first round, the Ukrainian team stunned Beşiktaş in the second round with back-to-back dominant wins: 4-2 in Turkey and 2-0 at home. These results confirm the growing competitiveness of a side that, after finishing third in last season’s Ukrainian Premier League, is eager to reclaim a leading role in Europe. Despite several squad changes in recent years, Shakhtar remains a club accustomed to the top stage—between 2006 and 2021, the Miners played in 14 of the last 15 Champions League editions, even reaching the quarter-finals in 2010/11.
With the Greek Super League set to kick off on August 23rd, Panathinaikos’ most recent match was the 1-1 draw against Rangers in the second leg of the Champions League second qualifying round. Unfortunately, the result wasn't enough after a 2-0 defeat in Glasgow the previous week.
Last season, one of Panathinaikos' main strengths was their home form. Rui Vitoria’s men lost just one of their last 17 matches at home, winning 11 of the last 13. Looking at their most recent five competitive matches—including the tail end of last season—the Greens have one win, one draw, and three losses, averaging 0.8 goals scored and 1.4 goals conceded per match.
After sealing their place in the third round with a 2-0 win over Beşiktaş (following a 4-2 first-leg victory), Shakhtar kicked off their domestic campaign with a 1-0 away win against Epitsentr, courtesy of a 79th-minute strike by Kaua Elias. That result marked their 12th consecutive away match without defeat, as well as their 20th unbeaten result in the last 21 games.
The Miners have started the new season in excellent form: four wins and a draw in their first five official matches across Europa League qualifiers and the domestic league. Under new manager Arda Turan, Shakhtar have retained their attacking edge, averaging 2.6 goals per game during this early stretch.
Although Shakhtar Donetsk impressed in their two-leg win over Beşiktaş, the first leg against Panathinaikos promises to be a much tighter contest. Despite being knocked out by Rangers, the Greek side showed that they remain a well-drilled, organized unit—particularly at home. This defensive discipline could prove troublesome for Shakhtar, who have yet to face a compact side like Panathinaikos in their qualifying run.
Tactically, expect Shakhtar to take a proactive approach, aiming to control possession and showcase their technical quality in build-up play. Key to this will be Marlon Gomes, who must dictate the tempo and deliver quick service to wingers Kevin and Alisson, who have scored 4 and 3 goals respectively in the Europa League qualifiers so far.
Panathinaikos, on the other hand, will focus on maintaining a compact defensive shape, looking to exploit counter-attacks or rely on moments of individual brilliance from Filip Djuricic—one of the most experienced and creative players in the squad. Their approach will likely be cautious, sitting deep and waiting for transitions, while Shakhtar dictate the pace.
Considering the expected tactical balance and the recent defensive numbers of both sides, the BetMines prediction leans toward Double Chance X2 in favor of the visitors and a match with fewer than three goals (Under 2.5). The data backs this up: three of Shakhtar’s last four games featured under 2.5 goals, and they’ve kept clean sheets in their last two competitive outings.
PANATHINAIKOS (4-2-3-1): Dragowski; Kotsiras, Palmer-Brown, Touba, Kyriakopoulos; Chirivella, Maksimovic; Pellistri, Bakasetas, Djuricic; Ioannidis. Manager: Rui Vitoria
SHAKHTAR DONETSK (4-1-4-1): Riznyk; Tobias, Bondar, Matviyenko, Henrique; Gomes; Alisson, Ocheretko, Pedrinho, Kevin; Elias. Manager: Arda Turan
