At the Estádio Algarve in Faro, Gibraltar hosts Croatia for Matchday 3 of Group L in the 2026 FIFA World Cup UEFA Qualifiers. For the 2018 World Cup runners-up, this is their first appearance in the group after skipping the opening two matchdays due to their involvement in the UEFA Nations League. Zlatko Dalić’s side comes off the disappointment of a quarter-final elimination against France, but now aims directly for the top spot in the group to secure a direct ticket to the next World Cup. It’s a completely different story for Gibraltar, who come into this clash with two defeats to Montenegro and the Czech Republic, and still sit on zero points. No surprises here: since joining FIFA in 2016, Gibraltar has never won a World Cup qualifier and is currently ranked 196th in the FIFA rankings. However, there have been a few positive signs in 2024. In the Nations League, the team led by Scott Wiseman went unbeaten with three draws and a win against San Marino, dreaming of a promotion to League C. Against Croatia, however, the match already feels like a foregone conclusion. Their only previous meeting, back in 2015, ended in a 4-0 win for the Balkan side. With a seasoned mix of veterans like Luka Modrić and Ivan Perišić, and rising stars such as Luka Sučić, Croatia aims to start strong, ease into group leadership, and take advantage of the direct clash between the Czech Republic and Montenegro, who currently lead with 6 points.
Gibraltar enters the match against Croatia on a four-game winless run, with two draws and two defeats, scoring just two goals while conceding eight. Their last win came on October 10, 2023, a 1-0 victory over San Marino in the Nations League.
Despite the two heavy losses in the opening qualifiers (4-0 to the Czech Republic and 3-1 to Montenegro), Scott Wiseman’s squad showed encouraging signs at home.
Aside from the defeat to the Czechs, Gibraltar had managed solid results in the Nations League: a 1-0 win against San Marino and a 2-2 draw with Liechtenstein. They also earned a 1-1 draw versus Moldova and edged Andorra in a friendly — small but visible signs of improvement at home.
Croatia makes their qualifying debut with the aim of reversing a less-than-impressive run. Zlatko Dalić’s team has won just one of their last five matches (two draws and two losses). Even that lone win — a 2-0 against France on March 20 in the Nations League quarter-final first leg — was canceled out as France came back to win on penalties.
Croatia’s away form is also concerning: their last road win (including friendlies) came in summer 2023 with a 2-1 victory over Portugal in a pre-Euro friendly. Since then, they've lost three of their four official away games (to Portugal, Scotland, and France, failing to score in both Glasgow and Paris) and drew once against Poland.
Croatia are heavy favorites against Gibraltar, thanks to their overwhelming technical superiority, international experience, and a dominant head-to-head record (4-0 win in 2015).
Key names stand out in the Croatian lineup: Luka Modrić, fresh from his Real Madrid farewell and rumored to join AC Milan; Ivan Perišić, revitalized at PSV after a rough spell; and Joško Gvardiol, a defensive rock at Manchester City. Up front, Dalić can rely on the scoring instincts of Ante Budimir, who netted 24 goals this season for Osasuna, and the seasoned Andrej Kramarić, who ended his campaign with 11 goals and 10 assists for Hoffenheim.
Given all this, it’s reasonable to expect not just a Croatian win, but likely a clean sheet as well. Gibraltar, in their only home match so far, failed to score against the Czech Republic and didn’t register a single shot on target.
Considering the above, the Gibraltar vs Croatia prediction clearly favors the visiting side, with a strong chance that at least one team, most likely the hosts, won’t find the net.
