On Monday, June 23, at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Manchester City face Al Ain on Matchday 2 of Group G in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which also includes Juventus and Wydad Casablanca. After their opening 2-0 win over the Moroccan side, Pep Guardiola’s men aim to reinforce their technical superiority and virtually secure their place in the next round. Against Wydad, City did the bare minimum: after taking a two-goal lead in the first half thanks to Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku (with Foden also providing an assist), the English side managed the result comfortably. Foden was undoubtedly the man of the match, while the debut of young Rayan Cherki, signed from Olympique Lyon this summer, left some doubts as he continues to search for rhythm and chemistry with his new teammates. On paper, this upcoming fixture appears even more straightforward: Al Ain were thrashed 5-0 in their opener against Juventus, a result that leaves the UAE side bottom of the group, level on points (zero) with Wydad but with a worse goal difference by three. Vladimir Ivic’s team showed clear technical and tactical limitations against the Italians, and only a sporting miracle could see them revive their qualification hopes.
Manchester City head into the clash with Al Ain boosted by a 2-0 victory over Wydad Casablanca in their tournament debut. Phil Foden starred with a goal just two minutes in and assisted Jeremy Doku’s strike in the 42nd minute.
Despite the match never truly being in doubt, there was a bit of controversy late on as Rico Lewis was sent off, a decision that left Pep Guardiola fuming.
The win over the Moroccan champions marked City’s third consecutive victory, following Premier League wins over Fulham and Bournemouth—results that secured third place in the league and qualification for the next UEFA Champions League campaign.
Looking at their last five competitive matches, City boast a strong record: three wins, one draw, and just one defeat, with an average of 1.4 goals scored and only 0.4 conceded per game.
Al Ain’s Club World Cup debut quickly turned into a nightmare as they were demolished 5-0 by Juventus on Matchday 1. The heavy loss exposed the gulf in class between the Emirati club and Europe’s elite. Only Auckland City, who conceded ten goals to Bayern Munich, performed worse defensively in the tournament’s opening round.
Against the Bianconeri, Vladimir Ivic’s side collapsed defensively in the first half and were completely toothless in attack, failing to create a single real scoring opportunity over the 90 minutes.
The crushing defeat ended a seven-match unbeaten run for Al Ain, during which they had collected four wins and three draws, keeping clean sheets in six of those games. Their last loss before Juventus came on March 29, when they were beaten 3-2 away by Dibba Al-Hisn in the UAE Pro League.
Manchester City and Al Ain have never faced each other in an official competition but did meet in a 2014 friendly, which City won 3-0 with goals from Hiwula, Jovetić, and Lopes.
Compared to the match against Wydad, Guardiola is expected to rotate his lineup slightly, giving minutes to players recently on international duty. Erling Haaland should start up front, while Rodri is set to continue building fitness in midfield after returning from a long injury. Matheus Nunes will replace the suspended Rico Lewis at right-back.
Vladimir Ivic, needing a miracle to stay alive in the competition, will field his strongest XI. The front two of Rahimi and Laba—who has already scored 21 goals this season—are set to start again. A surprise could be the inclusion of Alejandro Romero in the attacking midfield role (10 goals and 13 assists), potentially shifting the formation from a 3-5-2 to a more aggressive 3-4-1-2.
The prediction for Manchester City vs Al Ain points to a dominant win for the English side, who, just like against Wydad, have a good chance of keeping a clean sheet—especially if Al Ain show the same offensive shortcomings they displayed against Juventus.
