After overcoming the Linfield obstacle, Irish side Shelbourne continue their path toward Champions League qualification by facing Azerbaijani giants Qarabag on Wednesday, July 23 in Dublin. Shelbourne, who are also competing in the domestic league and FAI Cup, reached the second round after narrowly eliminating Northern Ireland’s Linfield. They secured a 1-0 win in the first leg at home thanks to a second-half goal by Odubeko, before drawing 1-1 in Belfast a week later with a first-half goal from Coote. Reaching the second qualifying round is already a small success for the Irish side, as they hadn’t achieved this since the 2005/06 season. Now, with nothing to lose, the Shels have every reason to dream big by trying to eliminate one of the most dangerous teams in the Champions League qualifiers: Qarabag. The Azerbaijan champions have come close to reaching the Champions League group stage in recent seasons, falling at the playoff round both last year and in the 2022/23 season. Currently in their pre-season phase after winning the Premyer Liqası for the twelfth time in their history, Qurbanov’s side can rely on solid European experience, having regularly competed in the UEFA Europa League group stages. In the 2024/25 edition—won by Tottenham—Qarabag finished last in the league-phase table, collecting only three points from one win and seven defeats. While their physical condition may not yet be optimal, Qarabag will aim to avoid defeat at Tolka Park and take full advantage of the return leg in Baku on July 30.
Shelbourne are currently enjoying a strong run of form, most recently winning 4-0 away against Fairview Rangers in the FAI Cup Round of 32. The standout performer was John Martin, who scored a hat-trick, while Daniel Kelly added the fourth goal. The Irish side are now unbeaten in six consecutive matches (3 wins, 3 draws), with 12 goals scored and just 5 conceded.
O’Brien’s men are coming off two consecutive home wins: a 3-1 league victory over Cork City and a 1-0 triumph over Linfield in the first leg of the Champions League first qualifying round. Promising striker Mipo Odubeko scored in both matches. In the Premier Division, where Shelbourne sit fifth with a 14-point gap from the top, their home form at Tolka Park has been mixed: 5 wins, 4 draws, and 4 losses, averaging 1.3 goals scored and 1.07 conceded per game.
Qarabag comfortably won the Premyer Liqası for the fourth consecutive season, finishing 15 points clear of the runners-up. They've since played a handful of friendly matches in preparation for the new campaign. The results have been underwhelming: just one win and three losses, the latest being a 2-1 defeat to Red Bull Salzburg. While Qarabag managed to score in all four matches (totaling 9 goals), their defense was clearly not up to par, conceding 11 goals.
Last season, Qarabag’s away record in the league was exceptional: 13 wins, 4 draws, and just 1 loss, with an average of 2.16 goals scored and only 0.55 conceded per match. However, replicating these numbers outside national borders is far more difficult. In the previous UEFA Europa League campaign, they lost all three of their away games (to Olympiacos, Elfsborg, and Tottenham) and managed just one win (against Bodo/Glimt).
Like many matchups in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round for 2025/26, Shelbourne vs Qarabag is an unprecedented fixture.
The Shelbourne vs Qarabag prediction by BetMines sees a very balanced contest, with the home side slightly favored to get a positive result (draw or win). This is due to the Irish club's current form—three wins in their last four matches—and the home advantage, often crucial in tight two-legged ties.
In terms of total goals, the BetMines algorithm leans toward a match with over 2.5 goals. This outcome has occurred in seven of Qarabag’s last eight matches, as well as in three of Shelbourne’s last five home games.
Overall, this looks set to be an open and competitive match. The home side will look to gain an advantage ahead of the second leg, while Qarabag—despite potentially lacking full match sharpness—will try to capitalize on their greater international experience.
