On Wednesday, July 16, Windsor Park in Belfast will host the second leg of the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round clash between Linfield and Shelbourne. The first leg, played last week in Dublin, ended 1-0 in favor of Shelbourne, leaving the tie wide open heading into the return fixture. The hosts, who need to win by at least two goals to advance, are a true powerhouse in Northern Irish football, boasting over one hundred domestic trophies in their history. In fact, they hold the world record for most national titles won: 57. Despite their domestic dominance, which allows them to regularly participate in Champions League qualifiers, Linfield have not progressed beyond the second qualifying round in the past four seasons. In the 2019/20 campaign, after being eliminated by Rosenborg in the first round, they dropped into the Europa League qualifiers and came just one step away from the group stage, losing in the play-offs to Qarabag. Linfield’s best-ever run in the Champions League (then known as the European Cup) dates back to the 1966/67 season, when they reached the quarter-finals. Shelbourne, meanwhile, showed excellent physical condition in the first leg, being in the midst of their domestic season, as they dominated possession and created several chances against Johns. Their 1-0 win came thanks to a well-placed left-footed shot by Ademipo Odubeko in the 58th minute. Despite the win, manager Damien O'Brien may regret the many missed opportunities that could have made the second leg a formality. With just a one-goal advantage, the young manager (a former player for West Ham and Shamrock Rovers, among others) will need to craft the perfect game plan to at least secure a draw and advance to the second round of Champions League qualifying — something Shelbourne hasn't achieved in two decades. However, the task won't be easy. Linfield are notoriously difficult to beat at home, especially with the backing of their passionate supporters, while Shelbourne have shown inconsistency when playing away from Dublin.
Linfield return to action after losing their first official match of the new season 1-0 to Shelbourne, complicating their European campaign. This Champions League qualifying defeat was their second setback in a row, following their Charity Shield loss to Dungannon on July 4. That match ended 0-0 in regular time and was decided by penalties.
Healy’s side dominated last season’s NIFL Premiership, finishing top of the table with a 22-point lead over second place. At home, they were particularly strong, recording 16 wins and 4 draws, averaging 1.85 goals scored and just 0.75 conceded per game.
While Linfield are just starting their new campaign, Shelbourne are deep into their league season. After 25 matchdays, they sit fifth in the League of Ireland Premier Division, just five points off the European spots. The form is promising: following the win over Linfield, O'Brien’s men have now won two matches in a row and are unbeaten in four.
Away from home, however, Shelbourne have been less convincing. Out of 12 away matches, they’ve recorded seven draws, three wins, and two losses. They average 1.08 goals scored and conceded per game on the road.
According to BetMines, Linfield are clear favorites to win this match, with a 47% probability. Shelbourne’s chances of an away win are estimated at 27%, while the draw is rated at 26%.
Supporting this prediction is Linfield’s outstanding home record: they’ve won 13 of their last 14 matches at Windsor Park. They are also under pressure to secure a win in order to progress. Shelbourne, on the other hand, have won only one of their last nine away games (six draws and two losses), highlighting their lack of consistency on the road.
In addition to backing the home team, BetMines also predicts a match in which both teams are likely to score. Linfield, needing at least two goals, will be forced to push forward aggressively. Meanwhile, Shelbourne have both scored and conceded in three of their last four games.
LINFIELD (4-3-3): Johns; Orr, East, Hall, McCullough; Archer, Mulgrew, McGee; Millar, Fitzpatrick, Morrison.

SHELBOURNE (4-4-2): Kearns; Caffrey, Barrett, Ledwidge, Norris; Wood, Coyle, Lunney, Mc Inroy; Odubeko, Coote. Coach: O'Brien.
